KITT, get me out of here! The smart watches era has already begun
Posted 24 Mar 2016
Do you remember David Hasselhoff in his famous role as Knight Rider? It does not seem like anybody could ever forget the popular series from the 80’s. You may not remember what it was all about, but you definitely do remember K.I.T.T., don’t you? The car with artificial intelligence was the best buddy of the main character. For me, the coolest thing about it was the ability to talk to him through a smart watch. Considered as science fiction in the 80’s, today smart technology is part of our everyday life: Remote control via smartphones or smartwatches, Siri, data glasses and many other wearables are nowadays commonly known and widespread. The development of new technologies is faster than ever before and seems to have no limits.
Especially wearables, such as activity trackers, fitness trackers and GPS watches, are the newest hype on the market. Almost every household appliance manufacturer and sporting goods manufacturer which has a good standing on the market, wants to tag along with the trend. Start-ups such as Fitbit were one of the first and successfully went public in 2015. At the latest since Apple promoted the first Apple Watch it was clear that a new age for wearables has begun. Uniting several features in just one gadget with functions like capturing fitness data, phone call recognition and chat function, the smartwatch has become a huge competitor to other wearables. Even though some of the first reviews were devastating, this was just the beginning. The technology is still very young, but with every new update smart watches could push the other wearable competitors aside.
Do you know a single person who still uses an mp3 player? You’ll hardly find anyone. A former hype, now it barely exists. Which is not much surprising, considering that all smartphones nowadays include an integrated mp3 player. Furthermore, each smartphone has even more features that are far smarter than that. They are able to stream videos, to record music as well as videos, to edit and even share them. Now imagine the entire smart technology of your phone and the features of your fitness watch come together in just one single accessorize that you wear everyday: your watch. Considered as science fiction just a few years ago, today and in the future we will be able to wear our whole life on our wrist. Contacts, appointments, pictures, shopping lists, emails, working sheets, chats, health data. Incredibly fascinating and kind of alarming at the same time, isn’t it? The technology is not ready yet though, smart watches do not substitute the smartphone or other wearables, but it’s only a matter of time. Apple is currently working on the third update of their watch and competitors like Samsung, Huawei, Sony, Pebble and many others are constantly working on further developments. Also newcomers such as NEVO stir up the market. We can definitely look forward to the future of wearables, there is more to come for sure.
Even though smartwatches have been available for quite some time now and are not even that expensive, we are not ready to subside our watch, a nice piece of jewelry, yet. Or would you go for a nerdy gadget instead? However, as soon as the smart technology disappears behind a beautiful designed watch, everyone will want to have one- an intelligent watch that opens your car, regulates the temperature in your house, monitors your heart rate, reminds you to pick up your laundry, to prepare your meeting for the next day and writes your emails.
